Durfee students win online STEM challenge

Check out this article from Herald News about the winners of the recent Principles of Engineering: Structural Bridge Design Online Industry Challenge for Project Lead the Way students!

FALL RIVER – The student team from B.M.C. Durfee High School was selected as the overall winner in an online industry challenge for Project Lead The Way, organized by Mass STEM Hub, a program of the One8 Foundation.

In the PLTW Principles of Engineering Design class, high school students engage in applied learning. Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. After learning about mechanisms, strength of structure and materials, and truss designs, students apply that knowledge to design, build, and test a bridge.

For this Mass STEM Hub Online Industry Challenge, students submitted their work to receive feedback from industry professionals, including engineers and project managers from MassDOT, MassDEP, and HDR, Inc. All students received feedback on their submitted bridge design reports, connecting the work they did through their PLTW class to real-world daily work of these industry experts.

Mass STEM Hub is a program of the One8 Foundation. Its mission is to provide schools with access to and support for the applied learning and STEM education that builds knowledge and skills students need to succeed in a rapidly changing, high tech world. Mass STEM Hub has helped scale Project Lead The Way’s K-12 curriculum in engineering, computer science and biomedical science to over 45,000 students in Massachusetts, enabling students to learn how to take theory to practice with real world problem solving.
